Cornered
She felt her breaths coming in rapid, shallow gasps. Her heart was beating even faster than the rushed inhales and exhales. Eyes wide she looked around, trying to quiet the sound of her breathing as it rattled its way through her sore and bruised throat and neck. She was able to hear it as if from a distance, the most prominent sound was a horrid ringing in her ears and that was followed by the dull thud as her heart beat, she could hear the blood as it throbbed through her head. Her aching head. It seemed to her that there was no part of her not in pain, and she wondered how much more she could take. But her thoughts were interrupted as she heard the fall of footsteps, surprisingly loud through all the racket of her body. “Come here little one, there’s nothing to fear.” She heard him lie, wondering why he even bothered. She struggled to hold her breath, knowing the loud, ragged sound would attract his attention if he heard it.
She had already narrowly avoided death. After all just minutes before he had tried to strangle her, but she was lucky enough to have been able to hit him with something hard, although she hadn’t had time to see what it was. Now she sat, crouched in the corner of the dark kitchen of the deserted hotel and he drew ever closer. She hadn’t had time to grab a knife, and now the rack where they were kept was blocked by him, he would hear her moving anyways. “Here pet, come on out, I won’t hurt you.” She glared into the half light of the direction he was in, maddened by the lie but too afraid to try to do anything. She could see his dark outline over the counter, a silhouette against one single hanging light, still slightly swinging from when she had bumped it in her flight away from him after he tried to choke her.
The moments passed and she was unable o hold her breath any longer. It came out in a rattling burst that she instantly knew was too loud. He ran over and she knew it was over. How could it not be? It almost looked like his eyes were glowing in the eerie half light of the dark kitchen. But of course that was just a trick of the light, reflected off of the various metal objects that were abundant in the kitchen. “There you are, why were you hiding love?” He said; there was a sickening tone of sarcasm and malice in his voice. It was easy enough for him to pick her up, she had always been a small child and now as an adult she was hardly any bigger. She knew that this was the end, she didn’t even have the strength left to struggle, she had been running for an indefinite amount of time and now there was no hope.
It's sort of inspired by The Shining by Stephen King I guess, just because it's set in a hotel, but other than that it's just me making a sort of (not so) creepy (really) short story. So um, yeah, boredom gets to us all I suppose.
